In 1878, Edison focused on inventing a safe, inexpensive electric light to replace the gaslight—a challenge that scientists had been grappling with for the last 50 years. Morgan and the Vanderbilt family, Edison set up the Edison Electric Light Company and began research and development. Numerous factories had been built through the years around the original laboratory, and the staff of the entire complex had grown into the thousands. To better manage operations, Edison brought all the companies he had started to make his inventions together into one corporation, Thomas A. Out west, judges were much less tied up in Edison’s oppressive patent apparatus and were much more likely to rule with the independents than with the conglomerate. Even in instances where Southern California judges ruled with Edison, their rulings were hard to enforce given that cross-country travel was onerous and expensive. Alice Wang’s first solo museum show in the US features glass works, ceramics, prints, and a film that trace her explorations into seemingly unnatural phenomena in the natural world. Drawing heavily from science, Wang swings from the micro to the macro, spanning molecular structures and the overwhelming abyss of space. Over six years, Wang documented sites in the American Southwest, Iceland, and the Arctic with similar landscapes as other planets, weaving footage of these “alien” sites with personal histories and drawing parallels between physical and psychological terrains. The studios at Greenwich House Pottery – Chelsea are equipped with a handbuilding classroom, a throwing classroom, and a mixed-use studio space, three electric kilns, a slab roller, and an extruder. A recent Foster Village survey of more than 100 of its client families found that 75% of caregivers are likely to continue fostering in 2022 because of the organization’s services. All said they depend on Foster Village to learn how to access resources and navigate the system. When a family decides to foster a child, it can be scary and overwhelming.

To achieve program goals, we will need a continued strong partnership with Mecklenburg County DSS which may also include a court program that will help us pilot phase 2 of the program. In addition, we also need strong leadership with lived experience as a birth family to ensure we are being intentional and thoughtful in our program design. This program expansion would also include the need for a new staff member and additional oversight and navigating to community resources that extend beyond the mission of FVC to help families sustain permanency. Reunifying families is a vulnerable population but there are risks involved including safety for our team and the children we serve.

The FVC team had recently moved into a Center that would serve as a home for their support groups, Welcome Pack storage and space for foster families and biological families to work together to support the children in their care. At Foster Village Charlotte (FVC), the commitment to providing a supportive space for children and foster families goes beyond the ordinary. FVC facilitates connections, offers educational and emotional support, and equips caregivers with essential advocacy tools. My vision has always been for Foster Village to be a safe haven for kids to come back to over and over again, one that’s comfortable and dignifying for their families.

Foster Village Charlotte connects families caring for children in foster care to each other and to ongoing, holistic support. Our approach includes support groups, workshops, one-on-one encouragement, foster parent mentorships and family gatherings. We build a peer-driven community that is facilitated by licensed therapists and experts in the field. A comfortable place to connect with people who "get it". Mami resembles someone who appeared in the final nightmare the Witch saw.
